We seek a warm, experienced and committed teacher who embraces the philosophy of Steiner Education and is excited to join and strengthen our School as an Outdoor Education Teacher, in our High School Program from 2024 at 1.0FTE.

 

Our School

Chrysalis Steiner School was established 40 years ago and we currently have around 240 students across classes K-10. The School is located on the Bellinger River, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the picturesque town of Bellingen. Our setting is on a hillside facing National Parkland, providing a uniquely beautiful environment for our children.

 

Role Summary

To plan, organise and attend most Outdoor Education programs for students in Years 3-10, ensuring programs support the Steiner and NESA curricula and facilitate a safe and rewarding relationship with the natural world.  This is a full-time position and includes participation in other school activities, meetings and events.

Key Responsibilities

  1. The Outdoor Education Coordinator will have primary responsibility for the outdoor education program for primary and secondary school students. This program includes a mix of responsibilities including program development, implementation evaluation and administrative responsibilities, including identifying destinations, obtaining necessary permits, organising transportation, ensuring safety and communications protocols as per the school’s policies and guidelines.
  2. In collaboration with Class Teachers and Guardians, plan and implement class field trips that support their class learning Program.
  3. Work with faculty to integrate the schools Field Trip / Outdoor education program into the classroom curriculum. The role will be responsible for planning and administrative functions of all field trips including budget and communications.
  4. Collaborate with the school’s Health and Safety Committee to ensure appropriate risk-management systems and procedures are implemented.
  5. Organise, catalogue and oversee the use and management of outdoor education equipment and resources.
  6. Participate in school based professional learning including attendance of staff meetings, and take responsibility for ongoing self-study of Steiner Education and Anthroposophy.
  7. A willingness to participate in aspects of the Chrysalis community, including co-curricular activities such as Festivals, Plays and Open Days.

The successful applicant will meet the following Essential Criteria:

Selection Criteria

  1. An understanding of the principles of child development through the lens of Rudolf Steiner’s picture of human development and how these apply to your teaching practice.
  2. A demonstrated love for children and teaching.
  3. A commitment to professional learning and inner development through anthroposophical studies and artistic activities.
  4. The ability to plan and deliver a developmentally appropriate curriculum that integrates the arts: music and singing, painting and drawing, movement, modelling, speech and drama in line with the Australian Steiner Chrysalis School Curriculum documents.
  5. Suitable qualifications at a Secondary Level including Outdoor Education and SOSE
  6. Teaching experience: with reference to Steiner Secondary Curriculum experiences where applicable.
  7. The ability to work collegially and a willingness to actively participate in and contribute to the cultural and festival life of the school.
  8. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  9. Hold a current Working with Children Check.

Required Knowledge / Skills / Competencies

  • NESA registration is preferred
  • Current Level 3 Wilderness First Aid
  • Current driving and light/medium rigid licence
  • High levels of energy and enthusiasm
  • Strong planning, leadership and organisational skills
  • Willingness to work within the ethos of Chrysalis Steiner School
  • Swift water rescue certificate or willingness to obtain
  • Bronze Medallion or willingness to obtain
  • Flat water instructor / Canoeing or equivalent experience

 

Desirable

  1. Suitable outdoor education qualifications and experience running and implementing a High School Outdoor Education Program
  2. Experience running the Duke of Edinburgh program.
